Kei muri i te awe kāpara he tangata kē/Behind the tattooed face a stranger stands/Seeking understandings beyond first impressions/Recognising, engaging, understanding difference

Theme & Programme

Theme

The conference theme is derived from the Māori proverb, ‘Kei muri i te awe kāpara he tangata kē’.  The literal translation of the proverb is, ‘Behind the tattooed face a stranger stands’.  For the purposes of this conference we have interpreted this to become, ‘Seeking understandings beyond first impressions’ and then one step further again, to become, ‘Recognising, engaging, understanding difference’.

The moko design work was created to represent this proverb by Māori moko (tattoo) artist, Tūrumakina Duleyz.

For fuller discussion on the Theme please see the next section entitled Explanation and Key Questions.
